Dragster Museum
Don Garlits is the King of Drag Racing.
He was famous in coming up with dragsters
that were different then others. My favorite
dragster he ever built was "Swamp Rat-I".
That beautiful blue dragster with flames,a
Hemi which only had about 10,000 miles,
came out of a wrecking yard.Don first,was
looking for a Caddy Mill,to put in his cool
dragster,but found the Hemi instead.This
Hemi in "Swamp Rat I' had six carburetors,
then they made like a open air box cover,
with both right and left sides exposed. This
cover painted the same color of the car.It
had long chrome headers much like cool
Bobby Barr Headers.This car completely
restored,is actually "Swamp Rat-IB" was
blown with with a different paint job.His
cars were some of quickest cars for that
time period. His "Swamp Rat" amt car,
which did over 250 miles per hour .
Followed up with other dragsters.
Don Garlits did have his crashes too,in
1970 was a serious dragster accident.
It was in Don Garlits hospital room he
designed the front engine dragster.
Blowers would explode at times, sending
that near you. So by having the dragster
cockpit in front of you, and the engine in
back, if the blower blew off, it would be
behind you. Also, scatter shields for
transmissions were designed, in case a
transmission exploded, it would not kill
you, or harm you.
Don Garlits "Swamp Rat XXX" his
copper snake nosed stream liner, which
had a bubble top, and Moon Discs, that
made headlines of about 300 miles per
hour: in 1986. This car is not in Don's"
Museum.
Don Has a Dragster Museum, which
he built later in Florida. It has Don's
most prized winning dragsters, but others,
including Tommy Ivo's Two Engine Nail
Head Buick Dragster, that Tommy Ivo
restored completely himself.
I personally emailed Don Garlits to linked
his website, with mine. He said yes. I also
asked about the amt sponsored "Piranha"
that Don Garlits bought from this cool
designer: Gene Winfield if it has been
restored? And the answer, was yes. He
sent me two pictures. Please note, the
wheels are weathered originals.
